Cocibolca: ‘sweet sea’

This project traces a non-linear history of Lake Cocibolca, the largest body of freshwater in Central America. Through collaborations with contemporary communities in Chontales and the Zapatera archipelago, it explores the ways humans have and continue to engage with this lacustrine ecosystem and the waterways that feed into it. Specifically, it employs historical ecological and archaeological methodologies, as well as ethnography, to study the intersecting but distinct temporalities of the lake’s human, piscine and volcanic neighbors and inhabitants.
